Proud To Be An American

I am so proud right now, I mean really proud. Where do I begin. I have always been proud to be an American(it's as prestigious as being a student at Harvard, joke). It's all because of the election process, where anyone who can make a change, has a chance. I really believe that americans of all races will vote for the woman or african-american man they really feel can bring about change to our great nation. This presidental election has been history in the making from the start. A woman and an african-american man both running for the democratic nomanation for President of the United States Of America, what's next? And, now Barack Obama has accepted the nomination for his party. And he will win.

I'm listening for the 1st time, The Next President of The USA accepting the democratic nomanation for president.

Never in my lifetime did I ever think this would happen. I'm sure my mom never thought she would seee this either and I know she along with others her age are so happy. When I say that I mean everybody not just black folk. I really believe he will win. Not because he is black, but because I feel he is what this nation needs. We want change.

Here's a little something I found on BET's webpage:

Kanye West is bittersweet about Barack Obama’s candidacy for president. West calls it “an incredible time” but he says, “I wish my mamma could have seen this day.” West was in Denver at the Democratic National Convention. He and Jamie Foxx performed a song dedicated to Obama at a party sponsored by Bono and the Recording Industry Association of America. Onstage Foxx declared, “With Obama, we make history.” Meanwhile, Oprah Winfrey, an early supporter of Obama, backing him even before the Democratic primaries got under way last year, said she cried her “eyelashes off” when Obama accepted the Democratic nomination. She said Obama’s speech was the “most powerful thing” she has ever experienced.

So as you can see americans of all races, ages, and social backgrounds want change. We want Barck Obama for president!!!!

Marion Jones Released From Prison

I'm sure you've noticed on my blog I have photos of black women we should admire, unfortunately there is one woman who I wish I could have on my blog. Marion Jones. I was so proud of this young woman. I mean she was the fastest woman in the world. I along with others rooted for her during the 2000 Sydney, Australia Olympics. She was Americas darling. We knew if any woman could win all gold medals in all 5 events they were competing in, it was Marion Jones. She won 3 gold and 2 bronze medals.

She was everywhere after the Olympics. I remember she had an ad with American Express. Every time I saw that ad I would watch it as if it were the first time. I felt so proud. Another thing I admired about her was her physique. She always looked so well toned. Her muscles were evident but not to manly. She just looked so strong and she was wonderful to watch sprinting on the track.

I didn't know she was under investigation for steroid use. I only heard about her troubles when she admitted to it. WOW, was I disappointed along with millions whose trust she betrayed. Why would any athlete feel that the public wants to watch and admire a fraud and a liar? Well we know why they do it.MONEY,FORTUNE,FAME,ENDORSEMENTS AND MORE MONEY. I'm glad some of them are getting caught for duping as into believing in their "superior performance" as a God given talent. When all the while their doping to enhance their performance, just so they can become the best in their sport.
Look at her body. She is lean, and muscles toned. She looks great. Why would we not think all of this was due to hard work?

Yes, Marion you messed up big time. We all have at some point in our lives. Unfortunately, yours was for the whole world to see. Now all your phony achievements are going to be cleared from the record books as if you were never a part of track and field. Well at least the honest, hard working, side of the sport. I hope you use your experience to help young athletes who are going to be seduced by the limelight and glory as you were. Help save lives and spirits by telling your story. This time tell the whole truth.

Diabetes Symptoms & Diabetes Symptom Checker

Remember not long ago I said that I had to be careful not to turn this blog into an entertainment only blog? Well now I have to be careful not to turn it into a health blog. Let me say also, that I can't help when I see something I know as black folk we need to see, hear, and read I like to share the information. So I want to mention a little about a disease that of course is affecting the black community: DIABETES. I have had 2 family members suffer from diabetes. The complications that this disease caused them were terrible. My first cousin on my maternal side had suffered from diabetes for as long as I could remember. She had problems with her eyesight, she was in and out of the hospital, she had to inject herself with insulin everyday. It was sad she was a very young woman, health issues related to diabetes eventually took her life. My maternal grandmother also suffered from diabetes. She had one of her legs amputated.
DIABETES is a serious condition that needs to be monitored. The American Diabetes Association says that "diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles".

Here are 5 symptoms you should pay attention to:

1) frequent urination
2) unexplained weight loss
3) tingling in hands and feet
4) sores that won't heal
5) excessive thirst

Use this symptom checker to see if you are at risk Diabetes Symptom Checker.

Diabetes can also led to other serious health issues:

1) heart disease
2) gum disease
3) stroke
4) kidney problems
5) nerve damage
6) blindness

To find out what causes diabetes and much more you need to check out Diabetes.Org. Once you're there look for the diabetes risk calculator. Take it and find out your risk!!!

I really wish that as a people we take better care of ourselves and our families. I don't take care of myself as I should but I'm going to start. I want to live a long and healthy life. I hope that we all do.

Black Women Broaden Your Horizons~~~PLEASE

There are sooooo many reality shows on tv these days. Too many to count and keep up with. I will admit I do watch a couple of them. The primary function of these shows I see, well I do believe is to show how stupid some people are and give us something to laugh at. Have mercy, I laugh at these characters all the time. Remember Tiffany Pollard aka "New York" from the show "Flavor Of Love" with Flavor Flav? She also had 2 shows of her own "I Love New York" 1 and 2. She'll always have a show or appear in one. Every Since I started laughing at her I never stopped. I will admit I enjoy watching her perform. Every week she shows how ignorant she is, that she has no class, uneducated and just plain stupid. Truly, she makes black women look bad, but I can't stop watching her. She is entertainment all by herself.

She obviously makes alot of money for VH1, because they gave her yet another show. This is her third with the network. "NY Goes To Hollywood" is the name of her new endeavor. This series is about her trying to become a serious actress, yeah right.I really don't want to bash any woman trying to get hers, and I especially would love to support every black woman in her success.

I don't catch it on the nights it originally airs. I usually watch the show online. It's the show I watched today, the 3rd episode that I am writing this post about. Like I said she is ridiculous. First, the way she wears her hair, makeup and clothes is a personal choice so I won,t comment on how she looks.

In this episode she gets a commercial shooting for a Japanese energy drink. Her manager tells her to do some research on Japanese culture. She obviously, thinks that everyone who is Asian, may be Japanese. So to do her research she goes to a cleaners where the woman there is Korean. She really doesn't know that Japan and Korea are not the same place. Black women let me say it again, broaden your horizons. Learn something it doesn't have to be alot, but at least the basics. Then she goes to a nail salon asking if they are Japanese. Of course they aren't. It seems as if even they were making fun of her. Wow, why not just go online and do some research or to a library where there are books? Too easy, huh? Maybe it's me but if I wanted to do research on a culture there are museums, art galleries, maybe even that countries embassy. No she goes to store owners for help. If you would do the same let me know.

She is willing to work hard on her commercial shoot. I will give her that much. During the shooting she was professional enough. It seemed she wanted to do well and show everyone she could do it. I hope that she does well and that I sincerely mean. I just hope she broadens her horizons, cuz she needs it.
You have got see all of her episodes and then you will see she is funny as all hell.

As black women we really should watch how we are potrayed and when its not right we need to be as loud as we can about our disapproval. I don't feel as if I am ever being judged by how other black women act, but I do want all black women to get the resepect we desrve.

So the moral to this post is Black Women broaden your horizons...PLEASE!!!!!

Breast Cancer Study For Sisters, Gift Registry for Breast Cancer Patients

I came across this site and as you can see it needs to be shared. This is a study for women who has had or have a sister with breast cancer. They are looking for all ethnic groups. At this time there maybe certain groups of women they are looking for more than others. If you are between the ages of 35 and 74, never had breast cancer and live in the United State or Puerto Rico then this study is one you should consider participating in. If you know someone who seems to be eligible pass this information on. For more valuable info The Sister Study.org

Another site I came across Links In Pink.Com lets women who are battling and surviving breast cancer start a gift registry. There's a tool to use to help you meditate. Search the site I'm sure there's some interesting things there. Any site that tries to help people and their families during a hard time is worth checking out, so I hope you can.
My prayers go out to all those during a hard time as this must be.

More Black Women Die In Childbirth Than Any Other Ethnic Group!!!!

I guess you're not all that surprised, are you? Well, I'm not surprised but I am very saddened to hear this. It seems our community is stricken with so many diseases that effects us much more severely than any other ethnic group. AIDS/HIV, cancer, hypertension, diabetes and the list goes on and on. I came across this article on BET.com. Seniors can't get their medicine and families are under insured or no health insurance at all. Black folk we really have to take care of ourselves and each other. Develop programs in our neighborhoods that those without adequate health care can get the assistance they need. Seniors can't afford to buy medicine and families are under insured or have none at all. Churches and social organizations can play a big part in helping Black America get healthy. Why not hold classes and seminars to help us understand what some of our symptoms may be so we can address them, fight them and live long healthy lives? I know some of these things are being done, but we need more. Obviously there isn't enough to help those who need this information.

My mother had a sister who died while giving birth to her second child. Growing up I often wondered how that could happen. To tell the truth I still wonder how it happens. We know that has to be hard for a family. I'm sure my Grandparents and the rest of my family and their community took it hard. That happened in the 50's.Well this is real life and it does happen and it will continue to happen.Let's do what we can to become a more healthier community, a healthier America and untimely the world.

Go Green Baby!!!

Take notice of how our world is changing. We hear so much about global warming, it really makes you wonder is it too late to save our sweet world. The intensity of hurricanes, glaciers melting, and destroying of the ozone layer are some of the effects believed to be caused by global warming. I was speaking with a co-worker the other day and I asked her when was the last time she saw an earth worm, a pretty little lady bug or even lightning bugs. I remember as a young girl living in the projects, catching lightning bugs in jars and then watching them light up at night. Winters were so cold that tears would come to your eyes as soon as you hit the outdoors and you could hear the wind blowing in your ears. That's when the hawk was out for sure and it was strong. Now during the winter as long as you dress warm most days aren't too bad.

One thing I have noticed, alot of people don't recycle. People I work with don't recycle and people in my building don't recycle. That's not to say that no one does, but I wish more people did. We take alot for granted. We overuse, don't conserve or recycle. Boy, are we in trouble.

I try and do a little and I want to do more. At home I recyle everthing I can or what I'm suppose to. Bottles, cans, paper all have a place to be stored. Now that's just a little. There are whole communities that are going green all the way. From the food they eat to how they take showers and use the toilet or not use the toilet. Something we hear so much about and never would have thought this possible, using vegetable oil as fuel for cars. Well people are doing their part to help our planet and things like this make me feel this earth will be a safe place for our children.

Here's 5 things we can do now to help save our earth:

1)Everyone loves a clean house(well most people do, some people are just nasty)but anyway did you know that alot of the products we use to keep our homes fresh contain chemicals, dyes and fragrances that can irritate eyes, skin and the respiratory tract. Look for products that are nontoxic, biodegradable and phosphate and chlorine- free.

2)This idea is also a healthy one, prepare a meatless dinner once a week. There are alot of resources used to get meat to the store. Water, grain, land and fuel for transportation all for us to have the meat we crave.

3)Support businesses that have made the change to green. If they can make a change you can too and we all benefit. Find businesses in your area Co-op America's National Green Pages can help CoopAmerica.Org

4)Redecorating soon? Well even the paint you use can help the environment. There was a time when you had to worry about lead in the paint. Now, you have to worry about synthetic materials used in petroleum based paint also in latex paint. They give off harmful compounds that evaporate into the air and linger for years. Imagine the harm that may cause. You need to use paint with a low or zero VOC (volatile organic compounds). Their made from plant oils, mineral and vegetable pigments. You can look for the paints among Benjamin Moore Eco Spec and Aura lines, also Sherwin Williams Harmony lines.

5)If your tired of junk mail, let someone know. It's big business for the USPS, but a pain for us all. When you don't want the mailings what do you do with the mail? Recycle I hope. Well, if you don't shame on you, but I'm sure after this post you'll start. You can go to the Direct Marketing association's site DMAChoice.Org and have your name removed from mailing lists.

*This list was complied by information from the June 2008 issue of Essence.

Oh Well...What To Do, What To Do Today

I'm sitting here trying to decide what to do for the afternoon. I want to go get my hair done, but I feel so lifeless. I just want to feel better and have clean hair. When I get my hair done it relaxes me so much. Especially the salon I go to, they really massage your head and get all into it. It feels so good. It's like a mini massage. I know once I'm out of the house I will feel much better. I wonder if it's a hot day or if it's humid outside.

What I really need is to go away somewhere and just have some fun. Unfortunately it can't be today. Man I would love to be sitting on a Caribbean beach, with a cold drink in my hand just lounging around doing NOTHING. I can feel the cool breeze against my face, clear blue water to relax me and the hot pink sand under my feet.Yesssss sir, Aruba,Bermuda or even Jamaica would do. It doesn't matter. Maybe, whenever I know I'm going on a vacation I will check out some places. I neeeed it bad!!!

You know what I really need to do? Read a good book. Do you know of one I may like? Well tell me of one you like. I may read it if it sounds good. There are so many good books out of all different genres. I read anything, it doesn't matter. I used to read a lot. Somewhere, I became a little busy and stopped. I have a lot of books in my personal library from the days I read heavy. I want to get back to that. Maybe today I'll stop at a bookstore or maybe pick one up from one of the guys selling books on 125Th St. If I pick one up I will for sure let you know which one. Maybe it will be worth reading and I'll recommend it to you.

You know what I really wish I could do today? Now this is the best idea I had in awhile.Play the lottery and win. Boy that would be the best thing that could happen to me today. "What would you do with the winnings?" you ask. Where would I start...There are so many people who need more than me, so I would start there. I would definitely help my family for sure, no doubt. Quit my job for sure, without a doubt, no doubt. I know that there is someone else who would benefit from it more than me (of course I don't need it, I have millions of dollars stupid). Picture this, If I won the lottery I could read a book, while getting my hair done in my backyard. Yes, my backyard is a beach on a Caribbean Island.
Now picture that, cuz I can!!!!

Jazmine Sullivan I Looovvvee Her New Song!!!!

I really don't want this blog to become exclusively an "entertainment" site, but it seems as if that's just where I'm going. So after this post I will need to be very careful.

Well first, I have got to tell you about a young lady I heard today, Philadelphia born Jazmine Sullivan. She is Ebony Girl Speaks/Artist Of The Moment. Her song "Need U Bad" is a hottttt song and I love it. The CD titled " Fearless" hits stores September 16.Very rare is it that I hear a song that I love the 1st time I hear it, but this is definitely one. Well actually, I saw the video. I was scared at first when I saw Missy Elliot, she produced the song. My goodness, I was hoping she wasn't gonna rap and mess the song up. Sorry Missy fans. I can't wait to hear more from this young lady. I'm off to her MySpace page MySpace.Com/JazmineSullivan maybe she has more songs there. I need to listen and hear more from her. Check It Out!!!

You know I want to talk about the show Black In America that was on CNN last night, hosted by Soledad O'Brien. Remember a 2ND part comes on tonight @ 9 PM. Tonight's show will focus on the black male and the problems they face here in America. I'm glad that they did the show to show we still have a ways to go. It was informative, and I'm sure some people learnt something new. If you watched the show I know you have some comments about the program so leave your thoughts here.

The one thing I want to mention( well there is more but we'll start here) and I always thought of this, why does it seem as if a black family who has a white male ancestor, who most likely forced himself on their black female ancestor during slavery always want to make it seem as if they had a real love affair? Well maybe they did. Who knows. Case in point Sally Hemming. You know that was Thomas Jefferson's mistress/slave. She was also the mother of some of his children.

Alright, let me discuss a little about the show. A few of the topics they discussed they centered around The Rand family from Dallas. That's the family I was talking about above. They followed the family for a year. Showing the successes and struggles of some of the members of the family. Some of the ills that affect our communities were discussed. Some of the biggest challenges amongst black folks is education, high drop out rate, single parent homes, health care issues. HIV/AIDS, unemployment, homelessness, black women not being able to find suitable black men for marriage and violence amongst young black men. On the other hand we saw The Smiths who are members of The Rand family. They were married for more than 20 years, owners of their own business and parents to 6 children who all are doing well. They are attending college, 1 graduated from college and 1 in high school soon to attend college. They are apart of the growing middle class here in America. They spoke a little about how they were able to raise successful children. They gave them "expectations".

This program spoke of ills in our communities that we know exist and I truly believe we will overcome them. Yes, there were some solutions to these problems too. A young lady here in New York has established Marry You Baby Daddy Day. 10 couples marry and begin to share their lives together as a family. Of course that's good for children all the way around. They will receive the support, and security they need and of course, if all is good a better economic status. Which hopefully will led to better neighborhoods and excellent education. Check out her website MarryYourBabyDaddy.com.

There's a program started by a young Harvard Economist, Roland Fryer who started a program that pays children to learn and study hard. Although controversial it is working. The kids receive $250 dollars if they pass 10 assessment test during the school year. The findings have not been reported but it's said the grades of the students have improved. I think he just wants to say that inner-city kids want to work hard and the money is just an incentive. Just like in some middle class homes.

Black women it is recommended that we date outside our race to find a mate. They mentioned that many black women have never been married as opposed to white women. I guess all this ties into black women having children out of wedlock. Successful and educated sistas have it hard. All that success and no one to share it with.

I really enjoyed the story of the doctor in Maryland who helps young men who are victims of violence turn their lives around. These young men need someone who has been where they are and made their lives a success to see that it can be done, if you want it enough. I believe success is everywhere you are. I could go on and on about this program, but the 2ND part is about to start. I have said it before and I will say it again I LOVE BEING BLACK BABY!!!!
