Oh Well...What To Do, What To Do Today

I'm sitting here trying to decide what to do for the afternoon. I want to go get my hair done, but I feel so lifeless. I just want to feel better and have clean hair. When I get my hair done it relaxes me so much. Especially the salon I go to, they really massage your head and get all into it. It feels so good. It's like a mini massage. I know once I'm out of the house I will feel much better. I wonder if it's a hot day or if it's humid outside.

What I really need is to go away somewhere and just have some fun. Unfortunately it can't be today. Man I would love to be sitting on a Caribbean beach, with a cold drink in my hand just lounging around doing NOTHING. I can feel the cool breeze against my face, clear blue water to relax me and the hot pink sand under my feet.Yesssss sir, Aruba,Bermuda or even Jamaica would do. It doesn't matter. Maybe, whenever I know I'm going on a vacation I will check out some places. I neeeed it bad!!!

You know what I really need to do? Read a good book. Do you know of one I may like? Well tell me of one you like. I may read it if it sounds good. There are so many good books out of all different genres. I read anything, it doesn't matter. I used to read a lot. Somewhere, I became a little busy and stopped. I have a lot of books in my personal library from the days I read heavy. I want to get back to that. Maybe today I'll stop at a bookstore or maybe pick one up from one of the guys selling books on 125Th St. If I pick one up I will for sure let you know which one. Maybe it will be worth reading and I'll recommend it to you.

You know what I really wish I could do today? Now this is the best idea I had in awhile.Play the lottery and win. Boy that would be the best thing that could happen to me today. "What would you do with the winnings?" you ask. Where would I start...There are so many people who need more than me, so I would start there. I would definitely help my family for sure, no doubt. Quit my job for sure, without a doubt, no doubt. I know that there is someone else who would benefit from it more than me (of course I don't need it, I have millions of dollars stupid). Picture this, If I won the lottery I could read a book, while getting my hair done in my backyard. Yes, my backyard is a beach on a Caribbean Island.
Now picture that, cuz I can!!!!

Jazmine Sullivan I Looovvvee Her New Song!!!!

I really don't want this blog to become exclusively an "entertainment" site, but it seems as if that's just where I'm going. So after this post I will need to be very careful.

Well first, I have got to tell you about a young lady I heard today, Philadelphia born Jazmine Sullivan. She is Ebony Girl Speaks/Artist Of The Moment. Her song "Need U Bad" is a hottttt song and I love it. The CD titled " Fearless" hits stores September 16.Very rare is it that I hear a song that I love the 1st time I hear it, but this is definitely one. Well actually, I saw the video. I was scared at first when I saw Missy Elliot, she produced the song. My goodness, I was hoping she wasn't gonna rap and mess the song up. Sorry Missy fans. I can't wait to hear more from this young lady. I'm off to her MySpace page MySpace.Com/JazmineSullivan maybe she has more songs there. I need to listen and hear more from her. Check It Out!!!

You know I want to talk about the show Black In America that was on CNN last night, hosted by Soledad O'Brien. Remember a 2ND part comes on tonight @ 9 PM. Tonight's show will focus on the black male and the problems they face here in America. I'm glad that they did the show to show we still have a ways to go. It was informative, and I'm sure some people learnt something new. If you watched the show I know you have some comments about the program so leave your thoughts here.

The one thing I want to mention( well there is more but we'll start here) and I always thought of this, why does it seem as if a black family who has a white male ancestor, who most likely forced himself on their black female ancestor during slavery always want to make it seem as if they had a real love affair? Well maybe they did. Who knows. Case in point Sally Hemming. You know that was Thomas Jefferson's mistress/slave. She was also the mother of some of his children.

Alright, let me discuss a little about the show. A few of the topics they discussed they centered around The Rand family from Dallas. That's the family I was talking about above. They followed the family for a year. Showing the successes and struggles of some of the members of the family. Some of the ills that affect our communities were discussed. Some of the biggest challenges amongst black folks is education, high drop out rate, single parent homes, health care issues. HIV/AIDS, unemployment, homelessness, black women not being able to find suitable black men for marriage and violence amongst young black men. On the other hand we saw The Smiths who are members of The Rand family. They were married for more than 20 years, owners of their own business and parents to 6 children who all are doing well. They are attending college, 1 graduated from college and 1 in high school soon to attend college. They are apart of the growing middle class here in America. They spoke a little about how they were able to raise successful children. They gave them "expectations".

This program spoke of ills in our communities that we know exist and I truly believe we will overcome them. Yes, there were some solutions to these problems too. A young lady here in New York has established Marry You Baby Daddy Day. 10 couples marry and begin to share their lives together as a family. Of course that's good for children all the way around. They will receive the support, and security they need and of course, if all is good a better economic status. Which hopefully will led to better neighborhoods and excellent education. Check out her website MarryYourBabyDaddy.com.

There's a program started by a young Harvard Economist, Roland Fryer who started a program that pays children to learn and study hard. Although controversial it is working. The kids receive $250 dollars if they pass 10 assessment test during the school year. The findings have not been reported but it's said the grades of the students have improved. I think he just wants to say that inner-city kids want to work hard and the money is just an incentive. Just like in some middle class homes.

Black women it is recommended that we date outside our race to find a mate. They mentioned that many black women have never been married as opposed to white women. I guess all this ties into black women having children out of wedlock. Successful and educated sistas have it hard. All that success and no one to share it with.

I really enjoyed the story of the doctor in Maryland who helps young men who are victims of violence turn their lives around. These young men need someone who has been where they are and made their lives a success to see that it can be done, if you want it enough. I believe success is everywhere you are. I could go on and on about this program, but the 2ND part is about to start. I have said it before and I will say it again I LOVE BEING BLACK BABY!!!!

Sanaa & Nia In Cartoon TV Show

By Karu F. Daniels

Two of the most beautiful actresses in black Hollywood are getting a bit animated with their next gigs.Sanaa Lathan and Nia Long are on board for 'The Cleveland Show,' a spin-off of the popular very adult-friendly animated series 'The Family Guy.'Earlier this week, casting was announced for the show, which will center around the character Cleveland Brown – which is voiced by white actor Mike Henry.Lathan, who starred in films such as 'Brown Sugar' and 'Love & Basketball' will play Cleveland's wife, Donna, while Long, who starred in last season's ABC drama series 'Big Shots,' will voice the character of rebellious stepdaughter Roberta.Set to debut next year, 'Cleveland' follows the Browns as they move to Cleveland's Virginia hometown and encounter neighbors including a "redneck" named Lester, a family of bears and a British family enamored with the Victorian era.In a colorblind casting move, black actor Kevin Michael Richardson will play the part of Lester."Clearly, the idea was just to make an ethnically diverse show in front of and behind the camera, which we are," and to create a largely African-American cast for the Brown family, Fox network programming chief Kevin Reilly told reporters during a Television Critics Association meeting this week.

I love them both, and i'm going to watch.

Natalie Cole Diagnosied With Hepatitis

Natalie Cole has been has been diagnosed with hepatitis C, a contagious liver disease spread by infected blood, according to the Associated Press.

A statement from Cole's camp revealed that the virus was found during a routine exam and that she likely contracted the virus during drug use many years ago. It is a common cause of liver disease and is reported to affect 13 in 1,000 people. Approximately 10% to 20% of those infected will develop cirrhosis and 1% to 5% will develop liver cancer.

"I've been so fortunate to have learned so much from my past experiences," said the Grammy-winning singer. "I am embraced by the love and support of my family and friends; I am committed to my belief in myself and in my abiding faith to meet this challenge with a heartfelt optimism and determination. This is how I intend to deal with this current challenge in my life."

Her Cedars-Sinai Medical Center physician, Dr. Graham Woolf, told AP that Cole has had a "terrific response to her medication and is now virus negative."

Cole is recovering from side effects of the treatment, including fatigue, muscle aches and dehydration.
Let's wish her the best health.

Assata Shakur Hero or Real Criminal?

I remember as a young woman reading this book. At that time I was very interested in anything dealing with a black power movement and pro-blackness and I am still. If it meant black power, sounded like black power, I devoured it. Malcolm X was my hero (still)The Black Panthers were beautiful and strong warriors. I read everything I could get my hands on. Somehow I became interested in her story, this story so I read it. Really, I don't remember much about the book. This post is more about her than the book itself. I do admire her for standing up for what she believed was right to help a cause. That she did for sure. She was definitely a "ride or die chick". My question is, is she a hero or a criminal?

She is admired by many, especially in the hip hop community. There are songs by artists such as Common "A Song For Assata". Public Enemy and X - Clan have recorded songs also. Let me not forget to tell you she is TUPAC SHAKUR'S aunt and godmother. His step-father is her brother.

There is a an offer of 1 million dollars from the FBI to anyone who helps with her capture. That is alot of bread for one sista. A letter was written to the Pope in 1997 by the NJ State Police to raise the issue of her being extradited back to the US, in his talks with Fidel Castro. In 1998 the then Governor of NJ Christine Todd Whitman asked Janet Reno, who at the time was the Attorney General to do whatever it takes to get Assata back to the States to complete her life sentence. As you can see they want her bad. Here in America she is labeled a "domestic terrorist". She now lives in Cuba, and has been since 1984 with political asylum.

From 1971 to 1973 she is accused of bank robberies, murders, kidnapping, attempted murders on police officers and assaults. Never was she convicted of any these crimes. Maybe you've heard of the New Jersey Turnpike shootings? In May 1973 she was involved in a shootout with some members of The Black Liberation Army and NJ state troopers on the NJ Turnpike.Killed were a State Trooper, one of her companions, Assata was severely wounded, another Trooper was injured also. A passenger who was also in the car with Assata escaped. He was later captured. I do remember that she writes about her being taken into custody after being shot on the turnpike in her autobiography.

She was convicted in 1977 of 2 murder charges, 6 assault charges. She received a sentence of 26 to 33 years to run consecutively with her life sentence for a murder that was proven she could not have committed because of her injuries. You can imagine this was the trial of the century in New Jersey.

She was held in several prisons in New York, New Jersey, and West Virginia. Subjected to vaginal, anal searches, not having good medical attention, or exercise, being watched all the time, and being placed under solitary cofinement for almost 2 years. It was at Clinton Correctional Facility For Women in New Jersey in 1979 that she escaped with the help of 3 members of the Black Liberation Army. Her brother Mutulu Shakur (Tupac's step-father) was among them. For years she avoided capture. I'm sure they tried everything in their power to find her. I wonder if they harassed her family and friends, you know they most likely wiretapped their phones, even followed them around. I remember hearing the FBI searched a Harlem apartment building with machine guns, shotguns drawn knocking down doors looking for her. Was she there? She avoided capture for 5 years, and then she arrived in Cuba.

There are so many things about this woman that fascinates me still to this day. She has written books and essays. Books and essays have been written about her. I wish I could share with you guys all that I have read about her, about her trial. Hopefully, you will seek more information about this interesting woman. She needs to be discussed. I am glad to know she believed in something but I'm not sure how I may feel about her methods of achieving her goals in the name of "black liberation". That's why I asked is she a hero or a criminal? I think a little of both. Now you know I'm sending you to a site you need to check out. Go to AssataShakur.Org for more information.

Eva Mendes In Rehab....

This is an actress I love. I was sorry to hear she had a drug adiction and was in rehab, but glad she sought help. I came across this article and wanted to share it with you. Let's wish her luck and keep her in our prayers.

Eva Mendes is more than willing to chat about her recent rehab stint and abuse issues, but don't joke around about it.

Mendes' cover story with Interview magazine turned south quickly when reporter David Colman seemed to poke fun at celebrities and how frequently they go to rehab. With questions like "Now let's talk about substance abuse. My favorite topic," and "They're going to have to change the name of it to 'Alcoholics Unanimous,'" it didn't take long for Mendes to get defensive.

"I'm not making jokes, because people die from this stuff. So, honestly, I think it's a bit tacky that you made a joke. I've got to be honest," the 'Hitch' starlet said, taking offense at Colman's tone.

His response? "You're angry."

Mendes shot back, saying: "I'm not angry. People have died, and I've lost friends too--even recently. So I can be a little sensitive on the subject."

Colman saves the interview from complete derailment by saying he hasn't drank in 11 years, and that he was "just trying to be light-hearted about it, because it's an awkward topic."

Mendes goes on, saying that there "are so many lies out there regarding my recent trip to Cirque Lodge," saying that the celebrity-obsessed culture has very little fact involved nowadays. Mendes said in a way, the lies are a good thing, because "when it's true, that's when I'd be like, 'Oh, my God!' It's time to rethink who's in your circle, because stuff got out."
